Gav for Guv!

As you all know by now, our own San Francisco major, Gavin Newsom is running for 2010 California State Governor, and I could not be more excited.

Over the last several weeks, “Gavy Gav” (as I like to call him) has been town-halling it all over the state of California. Today, he will appear in Santa Monica where more than 650 people have RSVPd for his forum.

His two main democratic competitors are current Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (age 56) and Former Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown (age 70), of which the latter has held the Office of Governor from 1975 to 1983 and currently holds the position of California State Atorney General.

So why do I think Gavvy’s got it for Guv and the other two do not?

1) Universal Healthcare: During his time as San Francisco mayor, Newsom started a universal healthcare program called ‘Healthy San Francisco’ which currently enrolls over 30,000 individuals. He feels that if ONE city is already on the way of providing universal health care for its residents, than a powerful state such as ours can also dp the same. And being in the healthcare profession myself, I strongly agree.

2) Public education: Established programs like Preschool for All and Afterschool for All and invested over $160 million dollars in public education. While other teachers are being layed off in cities across the state, San Francisco teachers are getting raises.

3) Our Environment: Newsom is a strong believer of adopting a culture of sustainability. He has set an example for the state by requiring San Francisco city government to be carbon neutral by 2020, investing in biodiesal conversion efforts of food waste and developing new ideas such as solar incentives and a local carbon offset program.

4) Social  Media: Gav has made an immense effort in getting his voice heard through various avenues of social media, which is what is believed to help our very own US President Barack Obama get into office.  Gav has very own Facebook age, a Twitter account, MySpace account, and various others to get his voice heard. It is because of these different venues that I feel more connected to him during this race to Governor.

Interesting post. I wasn’t aware that Gavin Newsom had setup a “universal” type health care system in San Francisco. Who are the 30,000 people benefiting from this? And how do I get this same coverage? Is the universal care for city employees only?

I think universal health care is the way to go, but with the current economic crisis and the huge government deficit, I don’t think the current administration will be able to get this done in the next 4 years without putting this country in grave economic danger.
